Sandoz contacted us with a need to strengthen the storytelling techniques for their Nordic Management Team of 13. The training was such a success that their GM asked us to develop a new training for their entire 140 person staff in their Nordic Team.

EXPLORING THE STORY OF SANDOZ

We were asked to find ways to help the people of Sandoz explore and develop stories within the framework of the company, and get them acquainted with proper tools to find and tell these stories with their customers and within their organization.

The full-day training should bring the team together, introduce the team to improv techniques,  and create a safe space where ideation and creativity can thrive.

A STRUCTURED APPROACH

A DAY OF TRAINING IN 3 PARTS

IMPROV Communication was an integral part of the planning of the event, working closely with the client over the course of a few meetings beforehand. We assisted in arranging the venue, designing handouts, posters, keychains and creating an overall structure to the day’s programme.

We agreed to structure the day like a story with a Beginning, a Middle, and an End. The IMPROV Communication team would use improv techniques in three areas:

  • One-on-One Performance Coaching with the General Manager
  • Facilitated Teambuilding & Storytelling with the Staff
  • A Surprise Improv Comedy show for Everyone

The Beginning

The day began with a presentation by Sandoz GM Alexander Krujatz, who went on stage in front of the whole team, and told his story.

Sandoz explained to his staff members where he grew up, what his childhood was like, and how he realized that a career in pharma was the proper path for him.

This effective, and personal story was developed through 1-to-1 coaching from Co-founder of IMPROV Communication Stefan Pagels Andersen, and set the tone for the entire day of exploring the science of storytelling.

The opening ended with Alexander’s challenge to his team: “We all have a story in our lives. Now I want you to find yours!”

The Middle

The bulk of the day was devoted to a 4-hour teambuilding and storytelling training session for the entire staff that focused on finding the teams’ WHY.

The group of 140 participants was split into 7 smaller groups. Each group was facilitated by a trainer from IMPROV Communication, who introduced the mechanics of creativity and storytelling through playful exercises based on improvisation techniques.

The facilitators then guided the participants towards their own conclusions about what types of stories they share within Sandoz, emphasizing the science of storytelling, and challenging them to rethink their purpose and proudly speak up about it.

The Ending

After the storytelling session the team reunited in the auditorium for a brief feedback session, sharing their learnings and takeaways in a safe space created by our Lead Facilitator.

At the end of the session, the IMPROV Communication facilitators agreed to “give a bit of ourselves”, performing a 35-minute fast-paced comedy show for the entire team. The result was laughter that could have awakened the mummies of the National Museums 3rd floor. 

The final performance was a great way to show the participants of our training how the theories we discussed during the day are integral to creativity, co-creation, and collaboration, and help make storytelling shine.
